And Can It Be

Verse 1
And can it be, that I should gain
An int’rest in the Saviour’s blood!
Dy’d he for me?—Who caus’d his pain! (Rom. 5:8, I Thess. 5:10)
For me?—Who him to death pursu’d.
Amazing love! How can it be
That thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

Verse 2
’Tis myst’ry all! Th’ immortal dies! (I Tim. 3:16, I Tim. 1:17)
Who can explore his strange design? (Rom. 11:33)
In vain the first-born seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine. (Eph. 3:18-19)
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore;
Let angel minds enquire no more. (I Pet. 1:12)

Verse 3
He left his Father’s throne above,
(So free, so infinite his grace!)
Empty’d himself of all but love, (Phil. 2:6-8)
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free! (Tit. 3:5)
For O my God! It found out me!

Verse 4
Long my imprison’d spirit lay,
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night:
Thine eye diffus’d a quick’ning ray;
I woke; the dungeon flam’d with light; (Is. 61:1, Luke 4:18, II Cor. 4:6)
My chains fell off, my heart was free, (Acts 12:7)
I rose, went forth, and follow’d thee.

Verse 5
Still the small inward voice I hear, (I Kings 19:12)
That whispers all my sins forgiv’n; (Rom. 8:16)
Still the atoning blood is near, (I John 1:7)
That quench’d the wrath of hostile heav’n: (Rom. 5:9)
I feel the life his wounds impart; (Isa. 53:5, I Pet. 2:24)
I feel my Saviour in my heart. (Eph. 3:17)

Verse 6
No condemnation now I dread, (Rom. 8:1)
Jesus, and all in him, is mine:
Alive in him, my living head, (Eph. 5:23, Col. 1:18, Col. 2:19)
And cloath’d in righteousness divine, (Job 29:14, Isa. 61:10)
Bold I approach th’ eternal throne, (Heb. 4:16)
And claim the crown, thro’ Christ, my own.
