Did Thine ancient Israel go

Verse 1
Did thine ancient Israel go
With solemn praise and prayer
To thy hallow’d courts below
To meet and serve thee there?
To thy body, Lord, we flee;
This the consecrated shrine,
Temple of the deity,
The real house divine.

Verse 2
Did they tow’rd the altar turn
Their hopes and heart and face,
Whence the victim’s blood was borne
Into the holiest place?
Tow’rd the cross we still look up,
Tow’rd the Lamb for sinners given,
Thro’ thine only death we hope
To find our way to heaven.

Hymnal/Album: Introduced in a hymnal jointly credited to John and Charles Wesley; it is likely though not fully certain that Charles wrote it.
