Saviour, inspire with unknown awe

Saviour, inspire with unknown awe
The souls who fondly dream
Thou cam’st t’ abolish thy own law,
Fulfilling it for them:
Put them in fear; and then display
The counsel of thy will,
The law thou didst for man obey,
In man again fulfil.

Hymnal/Album: Originally titled “Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”—[Matt.] v. 17. Introduced in Charles Wesley, Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. 2 (Bristol: Farley, 1762). Published in The Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley, Collected and Arranged by G. Osborn, Vol. 10 (London: Wesleyan-Methodist Conference Office, 1870), page 166.
