Lyrics

Verse 1
A mighty fortress is our God, (Ps. 18:2, Ps. 31:3, Ps. 71:3, Ps. 91:2
A bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing: (Ps. 46:1-3)
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe; (Eph. 6:11-12, I Pet. 5:8)
His craft and power are great, (Eph. 6:11)
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Verse 2
Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing; (Isa. 31:11)
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God’s own choosing: (Isa. 42:1, Matt. 12:17-18)
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His name, (Ps. 46:7, Ps. 46:11)
From age to age the same, (Ps. 102:27, Heb. 13:8)
And He must win the battle. (Ps. 46:9)

Verse 3
And though this world, with devils filled, (Eph. 6:12)
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed (Ps. 46:2)
His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him; (Eph. 6:10-11)
His rage we can endure,
For lo, his doom is sure, (Rev. 12:12)
One little word shall fell him. (Eph. 6:17)

Verse 4
That word above all earthly powers,
No thanks to them, abideth; (Isa. 40:8, I Pet. 1:24-25)
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through Him who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, (Matt. 8:21-22, Matt. 10:37, Matt. 19:29, Mark 10:29-30, Luke 14:26, Luke 14:33, Luke 18:29-30)
This mortal life also; (Matt. 10:39)
The body they may kill: (Matt. 10:28, Luke 12:4)
God’s truth abideth still, (Ps. 100:5)
His kingdom is forever. (Ex. 15:18, Ps. 145:13, Ps. 146:10, Dan. 7:14, Luke 1:33, II Pet. 1:11, Rev. 11:15)
