Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed?

Alas! and did my Sav­ior bleed

Would He de­vote that sac­red head
For such a worm as I? (Rom. 5:8, Job 25:6)

Thy bo­dy slain, sweet Je­sus, Thine, (Heb. 10:10, I Pet. 2:24)
And bathed in its own blood, (John 19:34)
While all ex­posed to wrath di­vine, (Rom. 5:9)
The glo­ri­ous Suf­fer­er stood!

Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned up­on the tree? (I Pet. 2:24, Acts 5:30, Isa. 53:6, Gal. 3:13, Acts 10:39)
Amazing pi­ty! grace un­known!
And love be­yond de­gree! (Eph. 3:19)

Verse 4
Well might the sun in dark­ness hide (Matt. 27:45, Mark 15:33, Luke 23:44-45)
And shut his glo­ries in,
When Christ, the migh­ty Mak­er died, (John 1:3, Col. 1:16)
For man the crea­ture’s sin.

Verse 5
Thus might I hide my blush­ing face (Ezra 9:6)
While His dear cross ap­pears,
Dissolve my heart in thank­ful­ness,
And melt my eyes to tears. (Luke 23:48, Zech. 12:10)

Verse 6
But drops of grief can ne’er re­pay
The debt of love I owe:
Here, Lord, I give my self away (Rom. 12:1, II Cor. 5:14-15, II Cor. 8:5)
