Lyrics

Verse 1
And live I yet by pow’r divine? (II Cor. 13:4)
And have I still my course to run? (Acts 20:24, II Tim. 4:7)
Again brought back in its decline
The shadow of my parting sun? (II Kings 20:1-11, Isa. 38:8)

Verse 2
Wondring I ask, is this the breast
Struggling so late and torn with pain!
The eyes that upward look’d for rest,
And dropt their weary lids again! (Isa. 38:14)

Verse 3
The recent horrors still appear:
O may they never cease to awe! (Ps. 55:4-5)
Still be the king of terrors near, (Job 18:14)
Whom late in all his pomp I saw.

Verse 4
Torture and sin prepar’d his way,
And pointed to a yawning tomb! (Isa. 38:10)
Darkness behind eclips’d the day, (Job 10:21-22, Ps. 23:4)
And check’d my forward hopes of home. (Isa. 38:11)

Verse 5
My feeble flesh refus’d to bear
Its strong redoubled agonies:
When mercy heard my speechless pray’r, (II Kings 20:5, Isa. 38:5, Rom. 8:26)
And saw me faintly gasp for ease.

Verse 6
Jesus to my deliv’rance flew,
Where sunk in mortal pangs I lay:
Pale death his ancient conq’ror knew, (Rev. 6:8, Hosea 13:14, II Tim. 1:10, Heb. 2:4-5, I Corinthians 15:54–57)
And trembled, and ungrasp’d his prey!

Verse 7
The fever turn’d its backward course,
Arrested by almighty pow’r;
Sudden expir’d its fiery force,
And anguish gnaw’d my side no more.

Verse 8
God of my life, what just return (Ps. 42:8, Ps. 116:12)
Can sinful dust and ashes give? (Gen. 18:27, Job 30:19, Ps. 103:14)
I only live my sin to mourn,
To love my God I only live!

Verse 9
To thee, benign and saving pow’r
I consecrate my lengthen’d days; (Isa. 38:5)
While mark’d with blessings, ev’ry hour
Shall speak thy co-extended praise. (Isa. 38:19-20, Ps. 34:1)

Verse 10
How shall I teach the world to love,
Unchang’d myself, unloos’d my tongue? (Luke 1:64, Mark 7:35)
Give me the pow’r of faith to prove,
And mercy shall be all my song. (Ps. 89:1, Ps. 101:1)

Verse 11
Be all my added life employ’d
Thy image in my soul to see: (II Cor. 3:18)
Fill with thyself the mighty void;
Enlarge my heart to compass thee! (Eph. 3:17-19, Ps. 119:32)

Verse 12
O give me, Saviour, give me more!
Thy mercies to my soul reveal:
Alas! I see their endless store, (Lam. 3:22-23)
Yet O! I cannot, cannot feel!

Verse 13
The blessing of thy love bestow:
For this my cries shall never fail;
Wrestling I will not let thee go,
I will not, till my suit prevail. (Gen. 32:24-26, Hos. 12:3-4)

Verse 14
I’ll weary thee with my complaint; (Luke 18:1-5)
Here at thy feet for ever lie, (Luke 10:39)
With longing sick, with groaning faint: (Song of Solomon 2:5, Song of Solomon 5:8, Ps. 6:6)
O give me love, or else I die! (Gen. 30:1)

Verse 15
Without this best, divinest grace
’Tis death, ’tis worse than death to live;
’Tis hell to want thy blissful face, (II Thess. 1:9)
And saints in thee their heav’n receive. (Rev. 22:4, Ps. 73:25-26)

Verse 16
Come then, my hope, my life, my Lord, (I Tim. 1:1, Col. 3:4)
And fix in me thy lasting home! (John 14:23, Eph. 3:17)
Be mindful of thy gracious word,
Thou with thy promis’d Father, come! (John 14:23)

Verse 17
Prepare, and then possess my heart, (I Chron. 29:18, Ps. 10:17)
O take me, seize me from above:
Thee do I love, for God thou art;
Thee do I feel, for God is love! (I John 4:8, I John 4:16)
