Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken

Verse 1
Glorious things of thee are spok­en, (Ps. 87:3)
Zion, ci­ty of our God!
He, whose word can­not be brok­en, (John 10:35)
Formed thee for His own ab­ode. (Ps. 87:1, Ps. 132:13-14)
On the Rock of Ag­es found­ed,
What can shake thy sure re­pose?
With sal­va­tion’s walls sur­round­ed, (Isa. 26:1, Isa. 60:18)
Thou may’st smile at all thy foes.

Verse 2
See! the streams of liv­ing wa­ters, (John 4:14, John 7:38)
Springing from eter­nal love;
Well sup­ply thy sons and daugh­ters,
And all fear of want re­move: (Ps. 23:1, Isa. 49:10)
Who can faint while such a riv­er
Ever flows their thirst t’as­suage?
Grace, which like the Lord, the giv­er,
Never fails from age to age.

Verse 3
Round each ha­bi­ta­tion hov­er­ing,
See the cloud and fire ap­pear! (Ex. 13:22, Ex. 40:38, Num. 9:16, Num. 14:14, Deut. 1:33, Neh. 9:12, Neh. 9:19, Ps. 78:14, Isa. 4:5)
For a glo­ry and a cov­er­ing
Showing that the Lord is near.
Thus de­riv­ing from our ban­ner
Light by night and shade by day; (Ps. 121:5-6)
Safe they feed up­on the man­na (Ex. 16:31-35, Num. 11:6-9, Deut. 8:3, Deut. 8:16, Josh. 5:12, Ps. 78:24-25, Neh. 9:15, Neh. 9:20, John 6:31, John 6:46, John 6:58, Rev. 2:17)
Which He gives them when they pray.

Verse 4
Blest in­ha­bi­tants of Zi­on,
Washed in the Re­deem­er’s blood! (I John 1:7, Rev. 1:5, Rev. 7:14)
Jesus, whom their souls re­ly on,
Makes them kings and priests to God. (Rev. 1:6, Rev. 5:9-10)
’Tis His love His peo­ple rais­es,
Over self to reign as kings,
And as priests, His so­lemn prais­es
Each for a thank of­fer­ing brings. (Heb. 13:25, Jer. 17:26, Jer. 33:11, Lev. 7:12)

Verse 5
Savior, if of Zi­on’s ci­ty,
I through grace a mem­ber am,
Let the world de­ride or pi­ty,
I will glo­ry in Thy name:
Fading is the world­ling’s plea­sure,
All his boast­ed pomp and show; (I John 2:17)
Solid joys and last­ing trea­sure (Matt. 6:19-21, Matt. 19:21, Mark 10:21, Luke 12:33, Luke 18:22)
None but Zi­on’s child­ren know.
