Lyrics

Verse 1
Hosanna, loud hosanna,
The little children sang; (Matt. 21:9, Mark 11:9-10)
Through pillared court and temple
The lovely anthem rang.
To Jesus, who had blessed them
Close folded to His breast, (Matt. 9:13-15, Mark 10:16)
The children sang their praises,
The simplest and the best. (Matt. 21:9, Mark 11:9-10, Ps. 8:2)

Verse 2
From Olivet they followed
Mid an exultant crowd, (Luke 19:37-38)
The victor palm branch waving, (John 12:13)
And chanting clear and loud;
Bright angels joined the chorus,
Beyond the cloudless sky,
Hosanna in the highest,
Glory to God on high! (Luke 2:13-14)

Verse 3
Fair leaves of silvery olive
They strewed upon the ground, (Matt. 21:8)
While Salem’s circling mountains
Echoed the joyful sound;
The Lord of men and angels
Rode on in lowly state, (Zech. 9:9, Matt. 21:5)
Nor scorned that little children
Should on His bidding wait. (Matt. 21:1-17, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-40, John 12:12-19)

Verse 4
Hosanna in the highest!
That ancient song we sing, (Ps. 118:25-26, Matt. 21:9, Mark 11:9-10)
For Christ is our Redeemer,
The Lord of Heaven our king.
O may we ever praise Him
With heart and life and voice,
And in His blissful presence
Eternally rejoice! (Ps. 16:11)
