If Thou but Suffer God to Guide Thee

Verse 1
If thou but suffer God to guide thee (Prov. 3:5-6)
And hope in Him through all thy ways, (Ps. 37:5, Ps. 55:22)
He’ll give thee strength, whate’er betide thee, (Isa. 40:29)
And bear thee through the evil days. (Ps. 37:19, Ps. 37:39-40)
Who trusts in God’s unchanging love (Ps. 37:3)
Builds on the Rock that naught can move. (Matt. 7:24-27)

Verse 2
What can these anxious cares avail thee, (Phil. 4:6)
These never-ceasing moans and sighs?
What can it help if thou bewail thee
O’er each dark moment as it flies? (Matt. 6:34)
Our cross and trials do but press
The heavier for our bitterness.

Verse 3
Only be still and wait His leisure (Ps. 37:7, Ps. 46:10)
In cheerful hope, with heart content (Lam. 3:26, Phil. 4:11)
To take whate’er thy Father’s pleasure
And His discerning love hath sent,
Nor doubt our inmost wants are known
To Him who chose us for His own. (Matt. 6:8, Matt. 6:32, Deut. 7:6, John 15:16)

Verse 4
God knows full well when times of gladness
Shall be the needful thing for thee.
When He has tried thy soul with sadness
And from all guile has found thee free, (John 1:47)
He comes to thee all unaware
And makes thee own His loving care.

Verse 5
Nor think amid the fiery trial (I Pet. 4:12, I Pet. 1:6-7)
That God hath cast thee off unheard, (Lam. 3:31-33)
That he whose hopes meet no denial
Must surely be of God preferred.
Time passes and much change doth bring
And sets a bound to everything.

Verse 6
All are alike before the Highest; (Job 34:19, Rom. 2:11, Gal. 3:28)
‘Tis easy to our God, we know,
To raise thee up, though low thou liest, (Ps. 113:7-8)
To make the rich man poor and low. (I Sam. 2:7-8, Luke 1:52-53)
True wonders still by Him are wrought (Ps. 77:14)
Who setteth up and brings to naught. (Ps. 75:6-7)

Verse 7
Sing, pray, and keep His ways unswerving,
Perform thy duties faithfully, (I Cor. 4:2)
And trust His Word, though undeserving,
Thou yet shalt find it true for thee. (Ps. 119:160, John 17:17)
God never yet forsook in need
The soul that trusted Him indeed. (Ps. 9:10, Ps. 73:25, Heb. 13:5)
