Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken

Verse 1
Jesus, I my cross have tak­en, (Matt. 10:38, Matt. 16:24, Mark 8:34, Mark 10:21, Luke 9:23)
All to leave and fol­low Thee. (Matt. 19:29, Mark 10:28-29)
Destitute, des­pised, for­sak­en,
Thou from hence my all shalt be. (I Cor. 15:28, Eph. 1:23, Col. 3:11)
Perish, ev­ery fond am­bi­tion, (Phil. 3:7-8)
All I’ve sought, and hoped, and known.
Yet how rich is my con­di­tion—
God and Heav’n are still mine own! (Ps. 73:25-26)

Verse 2
Let the world des­pise and leave me—
They have left my Sav­ior, too— (John 15:18-20, Isa. 53:3)
Human hearts and looks de­ceive me; (Jer. 17:9)
Thou art not, like them, un­true;
And while Thou shalt smile up­on me, (Num. 6:25)
God of wis­dom, love and might,
Foes may hate and friends dis­own me:
Show Thy face, and all is bright. (Num. 6:25, Ps. 4:6-7, Ps. 80:3)

Verse 3
Go then, earth­ly fame and trea­sure! (Matt. 6:19-20, Matt. 19:21, Luke 12:33-34, Luke 18:22)
Come, dis­as­ter, scorn and pain!
In Thy serv­ice, pain is plea­sure;
With Thy fa­vor, loss is gain. (Phil. 3:7-8)
I have called Thee Ab­ba, Fa­ther; (Rom. 8:15, Gal. 4:6, Mark 14:36)
I have set my heart on Thee:
Storms may howl, and clouds may ga­ther,
All must work for good to me. (Rom. 8:28)

Verse 4
Man may trou­ble and dis­tress me,
’Twill but drive me to Thy breast. (Matt. 11:28-29)
Life with tri­als hard may press me;
Heav’n will bring me sweet­er rest. (Rev. 14:13)
Oh, ’tis not in grief to harm me
While Thy love is left to me!
Oh, ’twere not in joy to charm me,
Were that joy un­mixed with Thee.

Verse 5
Take, my soul, thy full sal­va­tion;
Rise o’er sin, and fear, and care;
Joy to find in ev­ery sta­tion (Phil. 4:11)
Something still to do or bear!
Think what Spir­it dwells with­in thee; (Rom. 8:11, I Cor. 3:16)
What a Fa­ther’s smile is thine; (Num. 6:25)
What a Sav­ior died to win thee— (I Peter 1:18-19)
Child of Heav­en, shouldst thou re­pine? (Phil. 4:11)

Verse 6
Haste then on from grace to glo­ry,
Armed by faith, and winged by pray­er, (Eph. 6:16-18)
Heaven’s eter­nal day’s be­fore thee, (Rev. 21:23-25)
God’s own hand shall guide thee there. (Ps. 73:24)
Soon shall close thy earth­ly miss­ion;
Swift shall pass thy pil­grim days; (Heb. 11:13)
Hope soon change to glad fru­ition,
Faith to sight, and pray­er to praise. (II Cor. 5:7)
