Lyrics

Verse 1
Lord, if to me thy grace hath given,
A spark of life, a taste of heaven, (Eph. 2:4-5, Heb. 6:4-5)
The gospel-pearl, the woman’s seed, (Matt. 13:45-46, Gen. 3:15)
The bruiser of the serpent’s head; (Gen. 3:15, Rom. 16:20)

Verse 2
Why sleeps my principle divine?
Why hastens not my spark to shine?
The Saviour in my heart to move (Eph. 3:17, Col. 1:27, Gal. 2:20)
And all my soul to flame with love? (Eph. 3:18-19)

Verse 3
Buried, o’erwhelm’d, and lost in sin, (Eph. 2:1, Col. 2:13)
And seemingly extinct within,
Th’ immortal seed unactive lies, (I Pet. 1:23, I John 3:9)
The heav’nly Adam sinks and dies: (I Cor. 15:45, I Cor. 15:36, John 12:24)

Verse 4
Dies, and revives the dying flame. (I Cor. 15:36, John 12:24)
Cast down, but not destroy’d I am, (II Cor. 4:9)
‘Midst thousand lusts I still respire, (I Pet. 2:11, Gal. 5:17, Rom. 7:22-23)
And tremble, unconsum’d in fire. (Ex. 3:2, Isa. 43:2)

Verse 5
Suffer’d awhile to want my God, (I Pet. 5:10)
To groan beneath my nature’s load, (II Cor. 5:4, Rom. 8:22-23)
That all may own, that all may see
Th’ ungodly justify’d in me. (Rom. 4:5)
