Lyrics

Verse 1
Once in royal David’s city (Luke 2:4-5)
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for His bed: (Luke 2:7, Luke 2:16)
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little child.

Verse 2
He came down to earth from Heaven, (John 6:38, John 3:13)
Who is God and Lord of all, (Acts 10:36)
And His shelter was a stable,
And His cradle was a stall; (Luke 2:7)
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Savior holy. (Phil. 2:6-8)

Verse 3
And, through all His wondrous childhood,
He would honor and obey, (Luke 2:51)
Love and watch the lowly maiden,
In whose gentle arms He lay:
Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as He. (Eph. 6:1)

Verse 4
For He is our childhood’s pattern;
Day by day, like us He grew; (Luke 2:40, Luke 2:52)
He was little, weak and helpless,
Tears and smiles like us He knew; (Heb. 2:17, Heb. 4:15)
And He feeleth for our sadness,
And He shareth in our gladness.

Verse 5
And our eyes at last shall see Him, (Job 19:27, I Cor. 13:12, I John 3:2, Rev. 22:4)
Through His own redeeming love,
For that Child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in Heav’n above,
And He leads His children on
To the place where He is gone.

Verse 6
Not in that poor lowly stable, (Luke 2:7)
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see Him; but in Heaven, (Job 19:27, I Cor. 13:12, I John 3:2, Rev. 22:4)
Set at God’s right hand on high; (Ps. 110:1, Matt. 22:44, Matt. 26:64, Mark 12:36, Mark 14:62, Mark 16:19, Luke 20:42, Luke 22:69, Acts 2:33-34, Acts 5:31, Acts 7:55-56, Rom. 8:34, Eph. 1:20, Col. 3:1, Heb. 1:3, Heb. 1:13, Heb. 8:1, Heb. 10:12, Heb. 12:2, I Pet. 3:22)
Where like stars His children crowned (Dan. 12:3)
All in white shall wait around. (Rev. 3:4-5, Rev. 6:11, Rev. 7:9-14, Rev. 19:8)
