Once in Royal David's City

Verse 1
Once in roy­al Dav­id’s ci­ty (Luke 2:4-5)
Stood a low­ly cat­tle shed,
Where a mo­ther laid her ba­by
In a man­ger for His bed: (Luke 2:7, Luke 2:16)
Mary was that mo­ther mild,
Jesus Christ her lit­tle child.

Verse 2
He came down to earth from Heav­en, (John 6:38, John 3:13)
Who is God and Lord of all, (Acts 10:36)
And His shel­ter was a sta­ble,
And His cra­dle was a stall; (Luke 2:7)
With the poor, and mean, and low­ly,
Lived on earth our Sav­ior ho­ly. (Phil. 2:6-8)

Verse 3
And, through all His won­drous child­hood,
He would hon­or and ob­ey, (Luke 2:51)
Love and watch the low­ly maid­en,
In whose gen­tle arms He lay:
Christian child­ren all must be
Mild, obe­di­ent, good as He. (Eph. 6:1)

Verse 4
For He is our child­hood’s pat­tern;
Day by day, like us He grew; (Luke 2:40, Luke 2:52)
He was lit­tle, weak and help­less,
Tears and smiles like us He knew; (Heb. 2:17, Heb. 4:15)
And He feel­eth for our sad­ness,
And He shar­eth in our glad­ness.

Verse 5
And our eyes at last shall see Him, (Job 19:27, I Cor. 13:12, I John 3:2, Rev. 22:4)
Through His own re­deem­ing love,
For that Child so dear and gen­tle
Is our Lord in Heav’n above,
And He leads His child­ren on
To the place where He is gone.

Verse 6
Not in that poor low­ly sta­ble, (Luke 2:7)
With the ox­en stand­ing by,
We shall see Him; but in Heav­en, (Job 19:27, I Cor. 13:12, I John 3:2, Rev. 22:4)
