Prophet, on earth bestow'd

Prophet, on earth bestow’d,
A Teacher, sent from God, (Deut. 18:15, Deut. 18:18, John 3:2)
Thee we welcome from above, (John 3:31)
Sent the Father to reveal, (Matt. 11:27)
Sent to manifest his love, (I John 4:9)
Sent to teach his perfect will. (Rom. 12:2)

Thee all the seers of old
Prefigur’d and foretold; (Luke 24:27)
Moses thee the Prophet shew’d; (Deut. 18:15, Deut. 18:18, Acts 3:22, Acts 7:37)
Meek and lowly as thou art, (Matt. 11:29)
Abraham, the friend of God, (II Chron. 20:7, Isa. 41:8, James 2:23)
David, after his own heart. (I Sam. 13:14, Acts 13:22)

Verse 3
The lesser stars that shone,
Till thy great course begun,
With imparted lustre bright,
Render’d back their borrow’d ray,
Pointing to thy perfect light, (John 1:6-9)
Ushering in thy glorious day.

Verse 4
Light of the world below, (John 8:12, John 9:5)
Thee all mankind may know; (John 1:9)
Thou, the universal friend,
Into every soul hast shone:
O that all would comprehend, (John 1:5)
All adore the rising Sun. (Mal. 4:2)

Verse 5
Thy chearing beams we bless,
Bright Sun of righteousness: (Mal. 4:2)
Life and immortality
Thou alone to light hast brought, (II Tim. 1:10)

Call’d the world of grace from nought. (Heb. 11:3)

For this the heavenly Dove

Ah give us, Lord, to know
Thy office here below;
Preach deliverance to the poor, (Luke 4:18)
Sent for this, O Christ, thou art,

Bind thou up the broken heart. (Isa. 61:1, Luke 4:18)

Humbly behold we sit,
And listen at thy feet; (Deut. 33:3, Luke 10:39)
Never will we hence remove;
Lo! To thee our souls we bow,
Tell us of the Father’s love;
Speak; for, Lord, we hear thee now. (I Sam. 3:9-10)

Verse 13
Master, to us reveal
His acceptable will; (Rom. 12:2)
Ever for thy law we wait,
Write it in our inward parts, (Jer. 31:33, Heb. 8:10, Heb. 10:16)
Our dark minds illuminate,
Grave thy kindness on our hearts. (II Cor. 3:3)

Verse 14
Thine be the choicest store
Of blessings evermore!
Thee we hear, on thee we gaze, (Matt. 17:5, II Cor. 3:18)
Fairer than the sons of men, (Ps. 45:2)
Who can see that lovely face,
Who can hear those words in vain?

Verse 15
Spirit they are, and life, (John 6:63)
They end the sinner’s strife:
God they shew benign and mild;

Now we know him reconcil’d, (Rom. 5:10-11, II Cor. 5:19)

Thou art the truth, the way, (John 14:6)

Still instruct us how to give,

Holy and true, the key

Servant of God, confess
His truth and faithfulness;

Witness, within us place

Source of light, and life, and love.

Pronounce our happy doom,
And shew us things to come: (John 16:13)

Shepherd, securely keep

Feed us, in green pastures feed,
Make us quietly lie down,

Thou, even thou art he,
Whom pain and sorrow flee: (Isa. 35:10, Isa. 51:11, Rev. 21:4)
Comforter of all that mourn, (Isa. 61:2)
Let us by thy guidance come,
