Verse 1
Stay, thou departing Spirit stay,
Nor take thy presence quite away! (I Sam. 4:21, Ps. 51:11, Ezek. 10:18, Ezek. 11:13)
Tho’ now our languid hearts bemoan
Thy glory to the threshold gone, (Ezek. 9:3)
Yet do not, Lord, withdraw thy light,
Or leave us to eternal night.
Verse 2
Arise into thy resting place, (Ps. 132:8)
As in those wondrous antient days,
When God appear’d to dwell with men, (I Kings 8:10-13)
Betwixt the mystic cherubs seen, (Ezek. 9:3, Exod. 25:22, Ps. 80:1)
Worship’d by all the angel quire,
And symboliz’d by living fire. (Ex. 40:34-38, Ezek. 1:27)
Verse 3
Now to thy drooping church return,
Thou Comforter of all that mourn, (John 14:16, John 16:7, Is. 61:2)
Thy suppliants in thy temple meet,
And bless us from thy mercy-seat, (Ex. 25:22)
And still in our assemblies shine,
The dazling Shechinah divine. (Ex. 40:34-35)
Verse 4
The tokens of thy presence shew, (Ezek. 9:4)
And guard us from th’ invading foe;
Thy glory be our sure defence, (Is. 58:8)
Our buckler, thy omnipotence, (Ps. 28:7, Ps. 84:11)
Nor ever from thine house remove,
When fill’d with all the life of love.
