Verse 1
The Spirit of the Lord my God
(Spirit of power, and health, and love) (II Tim. 1:7)
My Father hath on me bestow’d, (Isa. 11:2, Isa. 61:1, Luke 4:18)
And sent me from his throne above.

Verse 2
Prophet, and priest, and king of peace, (Deut. 18:15, Ps. 110:4, Acts 3:22, Heb. 4:14, Heb. 7:2)
Anointed to declare his will, (Isa. 61:1, Luke 4:18)
To minister his pard’ning grace,
And govern every soul I heal.

Verse 3
To sinners bruis’d, and meek, and poor, (Isa. 42:3, Isa. 61:1, Matt. 11:5, Luke 4:18)
Good tidings of great joy t’ impart, (Isa. 52:7, Isa. 61:1, Luke 2:10)
Sinners incurable to cure,
And bind up every broken heart. (Ps. 147:3, Isa. 61:1, Ezek. 34:16, Luke 4:18)

Verse 4
The royal edict to proclaim,
Redemption for the captives found, (Isa. 42:7, Isa. 61:1, Luke 4:18)
Mercy for all in Jesu’s name, (Rom. 11:32)
And liberty to spirits bound. (Isa. 61:1, Luke 4:18)

Verse 5
Sinners, obey the heavenly call,
Your prison-doors stand open wide, (Isa. 42:7, Isa. 61:1, Luke 4:18, Acts 16:26)
Go forth, for I have ransom’d all, (Isa. 49:9)
For every soul of man have died. (I Tim. 2:6)

Verse 6
The Lord hath sent his only Son, (John 3:16-17, Gal. 4:4, I John 4:9)
To preach his acceptable year, (Isa. 61:2, Luke 4:19)
To make the joyful tidings known
Of vengeance, and deliverance near. (Isa. 35:4, Isa. 61:2, Isa. 63:4)

Verse 7
T’ avenge them of their tyrant-foe, (Isa. 61:2, Luke 18:7-8)
From sin, and Satan’s power to turn, (Acts 26:18)
The gift of righteousness bestow, (Rom. 5:17)
And kindly comfort all that mourn. (Isa. 61:2, Matt. 5:4)

To help their grov’ling unbelief, (Mark 9:24)
Beauty for ashes to confer, (Isa. 61:3)
The oil of joy for abject grief, (Ps. 45:7, Isa. 61:3)
Confident joy for sad despair. (Isa. 61:3)

They all shall spread the gospel-hope, (Matt. 28:19-20, Mark 16:15, Col. 1:23)
Soon as my righteousness they have, (II Cor. 5:20-21, Phil. 3:9)
Shall raise the guilty sinner up,
And sav’d themselves their brethren save. (I Tim. 4:16)

Verse 12
Workers with God, they now shall rear (I Cor. 3:9, II Cor. 6:1)
The church, that long in ruins lay,
Her desolate estate repair, (Isa. 58:12, Isa. 61:4, Amos 9:11)
Her antient piety’s decay.

With zeal, and heavenly wisdom fill’d, (James 3:17)

Mine image and inscription bear, (Gen. 1:27, Matt. 22:20-21, Rom. 8:29, II Cor. 3:18, Col. 3:10)
