Lyrics

Verse 1
There’s a wideness in God’s mercy,
Like the wideness of the sea; (Ps. 103:11-12, Mic. 7:18-19)
There’s a kindness in His justice,
Which is more than liberty.

Verse 2
There is no place where earth’s sorrows
Are more felt than up in Heaven; (Heb. 4:15, Isa. 63:9)
There is no place where earth’s failings
Have such kindly judgment given. (Ps. 103:13-14)

Verse 3
There is welcome for the sinner, (Luke 15:2, Luke 15:20, I Tim. 1:15)
And more graces for the good;
There is mercy with the Savior; (Ps. 130:7)
There is healing in His blood. (Isa. 53:5, I Pet. 2:24)

Verse 4
There is grace enough for thousands
Of new worlds as great as this;
There is room for fresh creations
In that upper home of bliss. (John 14:2-3)

Verse 5
For the love of God is broader
Than the measure of our mind; (Eph. 3:18-19)
And the heart of the Eternal
Is most wonderfully kind. (Ps. 117:2, Tit. 3:4-5)

Verse 6
There is plentiful redemption (Ps. 130:7)
In the blood that has been shed; (Eph. 1:7, Col. 1:14, Heb. 9:12, Heb. 9:22)
There is joy for all the members
In the sorrows of the Head. (Col. 1:18, Eph. 1:22-23, I Pet. 4:13)

Verse 7
’Tis not all we owe to Jesus;
It is something more than all;
Greater good because of evil,
Larger mercy through the fall.

Verse 8
If our love were but more simple,
We should take Him at His word;
And our lives would be all sunshine
In the sweetness of our Lord.

Verse 9
Souls of men! why will ye scatter
Like a crowd of frightened sheep? (Isa. 53:6, I Pet. 2:25, Matt. 9:36)
Foolish hearts! why will ye wander
From a love so true and deep? (Eph. 3:18-19)

Verse 10
It is God: His love looks mighty,
But is mightier than it seems;
’Tis our Father: and His fondness
Goes far out beyond our dreams.

Verse 11
But we make His love too narrow
By false limits of our own;
And we magnify His strictness
With a zeal He will not own.

Verse 12
Was there ever kinder shepherd
Half so gentle, half so sweet, (Isa. 40:11, Ps. 23:1, John 10:11, John 10:14)
As the Savior who would have us
Come and gather at His feet? (Luke 10:39)
