Watchman, Tell Us of the Night

Watchman, tell us of the night, (Isa. 21:11)
What its signs of pro­mise are.
Traveler, o’er yon mount­ain’s height,
See that glo­ry beam­ing star. (Num. 24:17, Matt. 2:2, Matt. 2:9-10)
Watchman, does its beau­te­ous ray
Aught of joy or hope fore­tell?
Traveler, yes—it brings the day,
Promised day of Is­ra­el.

Verse 2
Watchman, tell us of the night; (Isa. 21:11)
Higher yet that star as­cends. (Num. 24:17, Matt. 2:2, Matt. 2:9-10)
Traveler, bless­ed­ness and light,
Peace and truth its course por­tends.
Watchman, will its beams alone
Gild the spot that gave them birth?
Traveler, ag­es are its own;
See, it bursts o’er all the earth. (Isa. 49:6, Isa. 60:1-3, Luke 2:32)

Watchman, tell us of the night, (Isa. 21:11)
For the morn­ing seems to dawn. (Isa. 21:12, Rom. 13:12, II Pet. 1:19)
Traveler, dark­ness takes its flight,
Doubt and ter­ror are with­drawn.
Watchman, let thy wan­der­ings cease;
Hie thee to thy qui­et home.
Traveler, lo! the Prince of Peace, (Isa. 9:6)
Lo! the Son of God is come! (I John 5:20)
