Lyrics

Verse 1
We magnify the gift of God, (John 4:10, Eph. 2:8)
The common Saviour praise:
A talent is on all bestow’d, (Matt. 25:14-15)
A seed of saving-grace. (I Pet. 1:23)

Verse 2
To every soul it comes unsought, (Isa. 65:1, Rom. 10:20)
To raise him from his fall;
To all it hath appear’d, and brought
Salvation unto all. (Tit. 2:11)

Verse 3
From all ungodliness and sin
It teaches us to fly, (Tit. 2:11-12)
Forbids to touch the thing unclean, (Isa. 52:11, II Cor. 6:17)
Or but in thought comply.

Verse 4
From every earthly, low desire,
From every creature-love
It calls, and bids our hearts aspire (Tit. 2:12)
And seek the things above. (Col. 3:1-2)

Verse 5
It teaches us, and not in vain,
All evil to eschew; (Job 1:1, Tit. 2:11-12, I Pet. 3:11)
From every sin we now refrain,
And every good pursue.

Verse 6
Sober, and just, and godly here (Tit. 1:8, Tit. 2:11-12)
Whoe’er the grace receive,
With sin, and Satan ever near, (I Pet. 5:8)
A sinless life we live. (I John 3:6, I John 3:9, I John 5:18)

Verse 7
Our soul is chang’d, our heart is clean, (Ps. 51:10, Ezek. 36:25-26)
Our inward strife is o’er, (Rom. 7:23-25)
Here in this present world of sin, (Tit. 2:12)
We live, and sin no more. (John 5:14, John 8:11, I John 3:6, I John 3:9)

Verse 8
The power of godliness we shew,
To carnal minds unknown, (Rom. 8:7, I Cor. 2:14)
And perfect holiness below, (II Cor. 7:1, I Pet. 1:15-16)
And live to God alone. (Rom. 6:10-11, Rom. 14:7-8, Gal. 2:19)

Verse 9
Worthy we walk with him in white, (Col. 1:10, I Thess. 2:12, Rev. 3:4-5, Rev. 7:13-14)
Holy, and perfect here, (Matt. 5:48, I Pet. 1:15-16)
Till Christ with all his saints in light
Shall gloriously appear. (Col. 3:4, I Thess. 3:13, Tit. 2:13, Jude 1:14)

Verse 10
We look for that thrice blessed hope, (Tit. 2:13)
When time and death shall end, (I Cor. 15:26, Rev. 10:6, Rev. 21:4)
And Christ the judge, to take us up, (Acts 10:42, II Tim. 4:8, James 5:9)
Shall with a shout descend. (I Thess. 4:16-17)

Verse 11
Jesus, the great tremendous God, (Tit. 2:13)
Our Saviour shall come down; (Tit. 2:13, Acts 1:11, I Thess. 4:16)
To all who conquer’d thro’ his blood (Rev. 12:11)
He gives the starry crown. (Rev. 2:10)

Verse 12
That blood which he for all did shed (I Tim. 2:6, Heb. 2:9, I John 2:2)
To make us throughly clean, (I John 1:7, Rev. 1:5)
To save, and make us free indeed (John 8:36)
From every spot of sin. (Eph. 5:25-27)

Verse 13
For this he hung upon the tree, (I Pet. 2:24)
For this his life he gave, (Matt. 20:28, Mark 10:45, John 10:15)
Our souls from all iniquity, (Tit. 2:14)
Our ransom’d souls to save. (Matt. 20:28, Mark 10:45)

Verse 14
A royal priesthood to ordain; (I Pet. 2:9)
An holy, chosen seed, (Isa. 6:13)
And bring them to a perfect man, (Eph. 4:13)
And make them like their head. (Eph. 4:15)

Verse 15
He died, that we to sin might die, (Rom. 6:10-11, I Pet. 2:24)
And live to God alone; (II Cor. 5:15, Gal. 2:19)
He died, our hearts to purify, (Acts 15:9, Tit. 2:14)
And make them all his own. (I Cor. 6:19-20)

Verse 16
This is the dear, peculiar race, (Tit. 2:14, Deut. 14:2, I Pet. 2:9)
The people doubly bought,
Th’ elect of God, who sought his face, (II Chron. 7:14, Ps. 24:6, Ps. 27:8, Rom. 8:33, Col. 3:12)
And found the God they sought. (Deut. 4:29, II Chron. 15:2, Isa. 55:6, Jer. 29:13)

Verse 17
Zealous of all good works they live, (Tit. 2:14)
And all good tempers shew,
And still to God the glory give, (I Cor. 10:31)
And live his life below.

Verse 18
This is the fellowship of saints! (I John 1:3, I John 1:7)
I see it, Lord, I see
The grace which answers all our wants, (II Cor. 12:9)
The grace which is for me.

Verse 19
The glorious prize I now pursue, (I Cor. 9:24, Phil. 3:14)
For full redemption wait, (Rom. 8:23)
And soon I shall attain unto
My primitive estate.

Verse 20
Heaven I shall have within my breast,
Nor envy those above,
When taken into Jesu’s rest, (Matt. 11:28-29, Heb. 4:3, Heb. 4:9-11, Rev. 14:13)
And perfected in love. (I John 2:5, I John 4:12, I John 4:17-18)
