Lyrics

Verse 1
We are tossed and driv’n (James 1:6)
On the restless sea of time;
Somber skies and howling tempests
Oft succeed a bright sunshine;
In that land of perfect day,
When the mists have rolled away,
We will understand it better by and by. (I Cor. 13:12)

Chorus
By and by, when the morning comes,
When the saints of God are gathered home, (Matt. 24:31, I Thess. 4:16-17, II Thess. 2:1)
We’ll tell the story how we’ve overcome,
For we’ll understand it better by and by. (I Cor. 13:12, John 13:7)

Verse 2
We are often destitute
Of the things that life demands,
Want of food and want of shelter,
Thirsty hills and barren lands; (Ps. 107:4-5, Heb. 11:37-38)
We are trusting in the Lord, (Ps. 37:3, Prov. 3:5)
And according to God’s Word,
We will understand it better by and by. (I Cor. 13:12)

Verse 3
Trials dark on every hand,
And we cannot understand
All the ways that God could lead us (Deut. 8:2)
To that blessèd promised land; (Ex. 12:25, Deut. 6:3, Deut. 9:28, Deut. 19:8, Deut. 27:3, Joshua 23:5)
But He guides us with His eye, (Ps. 32:8)
And we’ll follow till we die, (Ps. 48:14)
For we’ll understand it better by and by. (I Cor. 13:12)

Verse 4
Temptations, hidden snares
Often take us unawares, (Ecc. 9:12)
And our hearts are made to bleed
For a thoughtless word or deed;
And we wonder why the test
When we try to do our best,
But we’ll understand it better by and by. (I Cor. 13:12)
