A follower of Thy suffering Son

A follower of thy patient Son,
I would the cup decline,
Yet let thy sovereign will be done
In preference to mine:
Like Him, submitting my request,
Whatever pangs I feel,
Father, in this I calmly rest,
Thou art my Father still.

Hymnal/Album: Originally titled: “‘O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will &c.’—[Matt. 26,] v. 39.” Wesley originally published this hymn as “A follower of Thy suffering Son” in his 1762 hymnal "Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. 2" (Bristol: Farley, 1762). He later revised and expanded it in his unpublished 1766 manuscript “MS Matthew.” This manuscript is part of the collection of the Methodist Archive and Research Centre in The John Rylands Library, The University of Manchester (accession number MA 1977/577, Charles Wesley Notebooks Box 3). Osborn, Vol. 10 (London: Wesleyan-Methodist Conference Office, 1870), page 404.
