God omniscient as Thou art

God omniscient as Thou art,
Manifested here below,
Well thou knowst a sinner’s heart
Better than myself I know:
Who, and what a wretch am I,
Only thou canst comprehend,
Thou, thro’ whom I now draw nigh,
Know, and touch the sinner’s Friend.

Hymnal/Album: Originally titled: “‘This man, if he were a prophet, would have known, who, and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.’—[Luke 7,] v. 39.” This hymn appears in the 1766 manuscript “MS Luke.” This manuscript is part of the collection of the Methodist Archive and Research Centre in The John Rylands Library, The University of Manchester (accession number MA 1977/575, Charles Wesley Notebooks Box 3).
