Trusting his own weak heart

Trusting his own weak heart
He could not God believe,
Who vow’d, though all beside depart,
He will to Jesus cleave:
“Thy persecuted Lord[“]Thou canst not now pursue:”
He tries, but finds the slighted word,
By sad experience true.
