The Spirit had to them foreshown

Verse 1
The Spirit had to them foreshown
Th’ afflictions waiting for their friend:
They counsell’d him the cross to shun,
Nor to the bloody city’ ascend,
But partly miss’d the Spirit’s mind,
Nor saw the whole by heaven design’d.

Verse 2
Jesus the previous knowledge gives
And thus his confessor prepares:
His confessor the cross receives,
By faith’s anticipating prayers
His one oblation multiplies,
And daily for his Saviour dies.
