Verse 1
And must I be to judgment brought,
And answer in that day (Rom. 14:12)
For every vain, or idle thought, (Matt. 12:36, II Cor. 10:5, Ecc. 12:14)
And every word I say?
Verse 2
Yes, every secret of my heart
Shall shortly be made known, (Psalm 44:21, Luke 8:17, Rom. 2:15, I Cor. 4:5, Heb. 4:13)
And I receive my just desert
For all that I have done. (Rom. 2:6, Rev. 22:12)
Verse 3
How careful then ought I to live,
With what religious fear, (Phil. 2:12)
Who such a strict account must give
Of my behaviour here! (Matt. 12:36, Rom. 14:12, II Cor. 5:10, Heb. 4:13, I Pet. 4:5)
Verse 4
Thou awful judge of quick and dead, (Acts 10:42, II Cor. 4:1, I Pet. 4:5)
The watchful power bestow,
So shall I to my ways take heed, (Psalm 119:9)
To all I speak and do.
Verse 5
If now thou standest at the door, (James 5:9, Rev. 3:20)
O let me feel thee near,
And make my peace with God, before (Rom. 5:1)
I at thy bar appear.
Verse 6
My peace thou hast already made,
While hanging on the tree, (Col. 1:20, Gal. 3:13)
My sins he on thy body laid, (Isa. 53:5-6, I Pet. 2:24)
And punish’d them in thee.
Verse 7
Ah, might I, Lord, the virtue prove
Of thine atoning blood,
And know, thou ever liv’st above
My advocate with God; (I John 2:1, Heb. 7:25)
Verse 8
Receive the answer of thy prayer,
The sense of sin forgiven, (I John 1:9)
And follow thee with loving care,
And go in peace to heaven.
