As taught by Thee, O God, I pray

Verse 1
As taught by Thee, O God, I pray,
Take all iniquity away, (Hosea 14:2, Ps. 51:2)
Thou utmost Saviour of mankind,
Nor leave the least remains behind.

Verse 2
The guilt, and power of sin remove, (Rom. 6:14)
The worldly, and the creature-love,
The easily besetting sin, (Rom. 12:1)
The passion dominant within:

Verse 3
The lusting flesh, the carnal mind (Rom. 8:7, Gal. 5:17)
To ill continually inclin’d,
Th’ Original depravity, (Ps. 51:5, Rom. 5:12)
Which never can submit to Thee.

Verse 4
Thy Spirit’s energy exert,
To circumcise, and cleanse my heart (Deut. 30:6, Rom. 2:29)
From wrath, concupiscence, and pride,
That Thou mayst in thy house abide. (John 14:23)

Verse 5
Thy Spirit, Lord, can sin subdue,
Can utterly extirpate too, (Rom. 8:13)
His more than conquering power employ, (Rom. 8:37)
And root and branch the foe destroy.

Verse 6
Then, Jesus, then the good bestow,
Which none but the receivers know,
The constant joy, the perfect peace, (Isa. 26:3, John 14:27)
The everlasting righteousness: (Dan. 9:24)

Verse 7
The patient, meek, and heavenly mind (Phil. 2:5)
The lowly heart, the will resign’d, (Matt. 11:29, Matt. 26:32, Luke 22:42)
The primitive simplicity,
The true, eternal Life in Thee. (John 17:3)

Verse 8
All the good things which now I claim,
And ask the Father in thy Name, (John 16:23-24)
The Gifts for men receiv’d above (Eph. 4:8)
O give me more than all in Love.

Verse 9
The Gift unspeakable confer, (II Cor. 9:15)
The Holy Ghost, the Comforter (John 14:16-17)
With Thee, and with thy Father one, (John 10:30, I John 5:7)
God over all, and Good alone.

Verse 10
Thou art THE THING my soul requires, (Ps. 73:25)
To fill my infinite desires,
Infinite Good, thyself impart,
With all Thou hast, and all Thou art!
