Verse 1
Come let us join our friends above (Heb. 12:22-23)
That have obtain’d the prize, (Phil. 3:14)
And on the eagle-wings of love (Ex. 19:4, Isa. 40:31)
To joy celestial rise;
Let all the saints terrestrial sing
With those to glory gone,
For all the servants of our King
In earth and heaven are one.
Verse 2
One family we dwell in him, (Eph. 3:14-15, Eph. 4:4-5, I Cor. 12:12-13)
One church above, beneath,
Tho’ now divided by the stream,
The narrow stream of death:
One army of the living God,
To his command we bow:
Part of his host hath cross’d the flood, (Josh. 3:14-17)
And part is crossing now.
Verse 3
Ten thousand to their endless home
This solemn moment fly,
And we are to the margin come,
And we expect to die:
His militant, embodied host
With wishful looks we stand,
And long to see that happy coast,
And reach that heavenly land.
Verse 4
Our old companions in distress
We haste again to see,
And eager long for our release
And full felicity:
Ev’n now by faith we join our hands
With those that went before, (Heb. 12:22-24)
And greet the blood-besprinkled bands (I Pet. 1:2, Heb. 12:24, Rev. 7:14)
On the eternal shore.
Verse 5
Our spirits too shall quickly join,
Like theirs, with glory crown’d,
And shout to see our Captain’s sign, (Heb. 2:10)
To hear his trumpet sound: (I Thess. 4:16, I Cor. 15:52)
O that we now might grasp our guide,
O that the word were given!
Come Lord of hosts the waves divide, (Ex. 14:21-22, Josh. 3:14-17, Rev. 22:20)
And land us all in heaven.
