Verse 1
Come ye followers of the Lord,
In Jesu’s[1] service join,
Jesus gives the sacred word,
The ordinance divine;
Let us his command obey, (John 14:15)
And ask and have whate’er we want, (Matt. 7:7-8, Matt. 21:22, Mark 11:24, Luke 11:9-10, John 14:13-14, John 15:16, John 16:23-26, I Jn. 3:22)
Pray we, every moment pray, (I Thess. 5:17)
And never never faint. (Luke 18:1)
Verse 2
Place no longer let us give
To the old tempter’s will, (Eph. 4:27, James 4:7)
Never more our duty leave
While Satan cries “Be still!”
Stand we in the antient way, (Jer. 6:16)
And here with God ourselves acquaint, (Job 22:21)
Pray we, &c.
Verse 3
Be it weariness and pain
To slothful flesh and blood, (Matt. 26:41, Mark 14:38)
Yet we will the cross sustain, (Matt. 10:38, Matt. 16:24, Mark 8:34, Mark 10:21, Luke 9:23)
And bless the welcome load. (Matt. 11:30)
All our grief[2] to God display,
And humbly pour out our complaint, (Phil. 4:6, Ps. 62:8, Ps. 142:2)
Pray we, &c.
Verse 4
Let us patiently endure, (Heb. 10:36, II Thess. 1:4)
And still our wants declare; (Phil. 4:6)
All the promises are sure
To persevering prayer;
Till we see the perfect day, (Prov. 4:18)
And each wakes up a sinless saint,
Pray we, &c.
Verse 5
Pray we on, when all-renew’d, (Eph. 4:23)
And perfected in love, (I Jn. 4:12, I Jn. 4:17-18)
Till we see the Saviour-God
Descending from above, (I Thess. 4:16-17, Rev. 1:7)
All his heavenly charms survey
Beyond what angel-minds can paint,
Pray we, &c.
Verse 6
Pray we in the realms of light (Rev. 21:23-25)
Till we behold his face, (I Cor. 13:12, I Jn. 3:2, Rev. 22:4)
Faith shall there be lost in sight, (II Cor. 5:7)
And prayer in endless praise;
Blest thro’ one eternal day
Possest of all that God can grant
There we cannot, need not,[3] pray,
For heaven is all we want.
