Depth of mercy! Can there be
Mercy still reserv’d for me!

I have long withstood his grace, (Acts 7:51)
Long provok’d him to his face, (Isa. 65:3)
Would not hearken to his calls,
Griev’d him by a thousand falls.

I have spilt his pretious blood, (I Pet. 1:19)
Trampled on the Son of God, (Heb. 10:29)
Fill’d with pangs unspeakable,
I—and yet am not in hell.

Lo! I cumber still the ground!
Lo! An advocate is found, (I John 2:1)
“Hasten not to cut him down, (Luke 13:7-9)
Let this barren soul alone.”
Verse 6
Jesus speaks, and pleads his blood, (Heb. 12:24)
He disarms the wrath of God, (Rom. 5:9)
Now my Father’s bowels move, (Isa. 63:15, Jer. 31:20)
Justice lingers into love.
Verse 7
Kindled his relentings are,
Me he now delights to spare,
Cries, “How shall I give thee up?” (Hos. 11:8)
Lets the lifted thunder drop.
Verse 8
Whence to me this waste of love?
Ask my advocate above, (I John 2:1)
See the cause in Jesu’s face
Now before the throne of grace. (Heb. 4:16)
Verse 9

Jesus! Answer from above,

If I rightly read thy heart,
