Depth of mercy! Can there be

Verse 1
Depth of mercy! Can there be
Mercy still reserv’d for me!
Can my God his wrath forbear, (Rom. 2:4)
Me, the chief of sinners spare! (I Tim. 1:15)

Verse 2
I have long withstood his grace, (Acts 7:51)
Long provok’d him to his face, (Isa. 65:3)
Would not hearken to his calls,
Griev’d him by a thousand falls.

Verse 3
I my Master have denied, (Matt. 26:34-35, Matt. 26:69-75, Mark 14:66-72, Luke 22:54-62)
I afresh have crucified, (Heb. 6:6)
Oft profan’d his hallow’d name, (Lev. 18:21, Lev. 19:12, Lev. 20:3, Lev. 21:16, Lev. 22:2, Lev. 22:32, Prov. 30:9, Isa. 48:11, Ezek. 20:9, Ezek. 20:14, Ezek. 20:22, Ezek. 20:39, Ezek. 36:20-23, Ezek. 39:7)
Put him to an open shame. (Heb. 6:6)

Verse 4
I have spilt his pretious blood, (I Pet. 1:19)
Trampled on the Son of God, (Heb. 10:29)
Fill’d with pangs unspeakable,
I—and yet am not in hell.

Verse 5
Lo! I cumber still the ground!
Lo! An advocate is found, (I John 2:1)
“Hasten not to cut him down, (Luke 13:7-9)
Let this barren soul alone.”

Verse 6
Jesus speaks, and pleads his blood, (Heb. 12:24)
He disarms the wrath of God, (Rom. 5:9)
Now my Father’s bowels move, (Isa. 63:15, Jer. 31:20)
Justice lingers into love.

Verse 7
Kindled his relentings are,
Me he now delights to spare,
Cries, “How shall I give thee up?” (Hos. 11:8)
Lets the lifted thunder drop.

Verse 8
Whence to me this waste of love?
Ask my advocate above, (I John 2:1)
See the cause in Jesu’s face
Now before the throne of grace. (Heb. 4:16)

Verse 9
There for me the Saviour stands, (Acts 7:56, Rom. 8:34, Heb. 7:25)
Shews his wounds, and spreads his hands, (John 20:27, Zech. 13:6)
God is love: I know, I feel, (I John 4:8, I John 4:16)
Jesus weeps! But loves me still! (John 11:35)

Verse 10
Jesus! Answer from above,
Is not all thy nature love! (I John 4:8, I John 4:16)
Wilt thou not the wrong forget, (Psalm 103:12)
Suffer me to kiss thy feet? (Psalm 2:12, Luke 7:38, Luke 7:44)

Verse 11
If I rightly read thy heart,
If thou all compassion art, (Psalm 78:38, Psalm 86:15, Psalm 111:4, Psalm 112:4, Psalm 145:8, Jam. 5:11)
Bow thine ear, in mercy bow, (Psalm 86:1)
Pardon, and accept me now.

Verse 12
Pity from thine eye let fall; (Ezek. 7:4, Ezek. 7:9, Ezek. 8:18, Ezek. 9:5, Ezek. 9:10, Hos. 13:14)
By a look my soul recall,
Now the stone to flesh convert, (Ezek. 36:26)
Cast a look, and break my heart. (Psalm 51:17, Luke 22:61)

Verse 13
Now incline me to repent, (Lam. 5:21)
Let me now my fall lament; (Rev. 2:5)
Now my foul revolt deplore,
Weep, believe, and sin no more! (John 5:14, John 8:11)
