Forgive my partial selfishness

Forgive my partial selfishness,
My rash, censorious thought,
“Among this people, in this place,
Surely the Lord is not!
If strangers to my sect and name,
Strangers they are to thee,
God is not fear’d, except by them
Who know, and honour me.”

Hymnal/Album: Originally titled “I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place.”—[Gen.] xx. 11. Introduced in Charles Wesley, Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. 1 (Bristol: Farley, 1762). Published in The Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley, Collected and Arranged by G. Osborn, Vol. 9 (London: Wesleyan-Methodist Conference Office, 1870), page 23.
