From nature’s different mixtures free

From nature’s different mixtures free,
Honey the joy, and grief the leaven,
I bring my sacrifice to thee,
Jesus, my great high-priest in heaven:
That God my offering may receive,
I set my heart on things above,
The sour of worldly sorrow leave,
The cloying sweets of creature-love.

Hymnal/Album: Originally titled “Ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any offering of the Lord.”—[Lev.] ii. 11. Introduced in Charles Wesley, Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. 1 (Bristol: Farley, 1762). Published in The Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley, Collected and Arranged by G. Osborn, Vol. 9 (London: Wesleyan-Methodist Conference Office, 1870), page 58.
