Verse 1
My heart is full of Christ, and longs
Its glorious matter to declare! (Psalm 45:1)
Of him I make my loftiest songs,
I cannot from his praise forbear;
My ready tongue makes hast [haste] to sing (Psalm 45:1)
The beauties of my heavenly King. (Isa. 33:17)

Verse 2
Fairer than all the earth-born race, (Psalm 45:2)
Perfect in comliness [comeliness] thou art,
Replenish’d are thy lips with grace, (Psalm 45:2, Prov. 22:11)
And full of love thy tender heart:
God ever blest, we bow the knee, (Psalm 45:2, Is. 45:23, Rom. 14:11, Phil. 2:10-11)
And own all fulness dwells in thee. (Col. 1:19, Col. 2:9)

Verse 3
Gird on thy thigh the Spirit’s sword, (Psalm 45:3, Eph. 6:17)
And take to thee thy power divine,
Stir up thy strength, Almighty Lord, (Psalm 80:2)
All power, and majesty are thine, (Psalm 45:3, Matt. 28:18)
Assert thy worship, and renown,
O all-redeeming God come down.

Verse 4
Come, and maintain thy righteous cause,
And let thy glorious toil succeed,
Dispread the victory of thy cross, (Col. 2:15)
Ride on, and prosper in thy deed, (Psalm 45:4)
Thro’ earth triumphantly ride on, (Psalm 45:4)
And reign in all our hearts alone. (Eph. 3:17, Col. 3:15)

Verse 5
Still let the word of truth prevail, (Isa. 55:11, II Tim. 2:15, Acts 19:20)
The gospel of thy general grace,
Of mercy mild that ne’er shall fail, (Lam. 3:22-23)
Of everlasting righteousness (Dan. 9:24, Psalm 119:142)
Into the faithful soul brought in,
To root out all the seeds of sin.

Verse 6
Terrible things thine own right-hand (Psalm 98:1, Psalm 110:5-6)
Shall teach thy greatness to perform: (Psalm 45:4)
Who in the vengeful day can stand (Nahum 1:6, Mal. 3:2)
Unshaken by thine anger’s storm
While riding on the whirlwind’s wings, (Nahum 1:3)
They meet the thundring King of kings! (Psalm 45:4, I Tim. 6:15, Rev. 17:14, Rev. 19:16)

Verse 7
Sharp are the arrows of thy love, (Psalm 45:5)
And pierce the most obdurate heart: (Psalm 45:5, Psalm 38:2)
Their point thine enemies shall prove, (Psalm 45:5)
And strangely fill’d with pleasing smart,
Fall down before thy cross subdued, (Psalm 45:5)
And feel thine arrows dipt in blood. (Deut. 32:42)

Verse 8
O God of love, thy sway we own, (I Jn. 4:8, I Jn. 4:16)
Thy dying love doth all controul;
Justice and grace support thy throne, (Psalm 89:14, Psalm 97:2, Heb. 4:16)
Set up in every faithful soul,
Stedfast it stands in them, and sure,
When pure as thou their God art pure. (I Pet. 1:16)

Verse 9
Lover thou art of purity, (Psalm 45:7, Hab. 1:13)
And hatest every spot of sin,
Nothing profane can dwell with thee, (Psalm 45:7, Psalm 5:4)
Nothing unholy or unclean: (Rev. 21:27)
And therefore doth thy Father own
His glorious likeness in his Son. (John 14:9, I Cor. 4:4, Col. 1:15, Heb. 1:3)

Verse 10
Therefore he hath his Spirit shed
Spirit of joy, and power, and grace, (II Tim. 1:7)
Immeasurably on thy head; (Psalm 45:7, John 3:34)
First-born of all the chosen race, (Col. 1:18)
From thee the sacred unction springs
That makes thy fellows priests and kings. (I Pet. 2:9, Rev. 1:6, Rev. 5:10)

Verse 11
Sweet is the odour of thy name, (Song of Solomon 1:3)
Thro’ all the means a fragrance comes; (II Cor. 2:15-16)
Thy garments hide the sinner’s shame, (Isa. 61:10)
Thy garments shed divine perfumes, (Psalm 45:8)
That thro’ the ivory-palace flow, (Psalm 45:8)
The church, in which thou reign’st below. (Eph. 1:22, Eph. 5:23, Col. 1:18)

Verse 12
Thy heavenly charms the virgins move, (Song of Solomon 1:3-4, Rev. 14:4)
And bow them to thy pleasing sway;
They triumph in thy princely love,
Thy will with all their hearts obey,
Revere their honourable word,
The glorious handmaids of the Lord. (Psalm 45:9, Luke 1:38)

Verse 13
High above all, at thy right-hand
Adorn’d with each diviner grace,
Thy fav’rite queen exults to stand, (Psalm 45:9, Eph. 5:25-27, I Cor. 11:2, Rev. 19:7-8)
Thy church her heavenly charms displays,
Cloath’d with the sun, for glory meet,
She sees the moon beneath her feet. (Rev. 12:1)

Verse 14
Daughter of heaven, tho’ born on earth, (Psalm 45:10, Phil. 3:20)
Incline thy willing heart and ear, (Psalm 45:10)
Forget thy first ignoble birth,
Thy people, and thy kinsfolk here, (Psalm 45:10)
So shall the King delight to see
His beauties copied out on thee. (Psalm 45:11, II Cor. 3:18, Rom. 8:29, I Cor. 15:49, I Jn. 3:2)

Verse 15
He only is thy God and Lord,
Worship divine to him be given, (Psalm 45:11)
By all the host of heaven ador’d, (Rev. 5:11-13)
By every creature under heaven: (Isa. 45:23, Rom. 14:11, Phil. 2:10-11)
And all the Gentile world shall know,
And freely to his service flow. (Psalm 86:9, Isa. 2:2-2, Isa. 60:3, Rev. 21:24-26)

Verse 16
The rich shall lay their riches down, (Psalm 45:12)
And poor become for Jesus’ sake, (Matt. 19:21, Mark 10:21, Luke 18:22)
Kings at his feet shall cast their crown, (Rev. 4:10)
And humble suit for mercy make, (Luke 18:13-14)
(Mercy alike on all bestow’d)
And languish to be great in God.

Verse 17
Are not his servants kings? And rule (I Pet. 2:9, Rev. 1:6, Rev. 5:10)
They not o’er hell, and earth, and sin? (Rom. 6:14, Psalm 19:13)
His daughter is divinely full
Of Christ, and glorious all within; (Psalm 45:13, Eph. 3:19)
All-glorious inwardly she reigns,
And not one spot of sin remains. (Eph. 5:27, Song of Solomon 4:7)

Verse 18
Cloath’d with humility and love, (I Pet. 5:5, Col. 3:12, Col. 3:14)
With every dazling virtue bright,
With faith which God vouchsafes t’ approve,
Precious in her great Father’s sight, (Isa. 43:4, I Pet. 3:4)
The royal maid with joy shall come, (Psalm 45:14)
Triumphant to her heavenly home. (Isa. 35:10, Isa. 51:11, Rev. 21:2)

Verse 19
Brought by his sweet attracting grace,
She first shall in his sight appear,
In holiness behold his face, (Heb. 12:14)
Made perfect with her fellows here, (Heb. 12:23)
Spotless, and pure, a virgin train (Psalm 45:14, Rev. 14:4)
They all shall in his palace reign.

Verse 20
In lieu of seers and patriarchs old,
Of whom she once did make her boast,
The Virgin Mother shall behold
Her numerous sons, a princely host, (Psalm 45:16, Isa. 54:1-3, Gal. 4:26-27)
Instal’d o’er all the earth abroad,
Anointed kings, and priests to God. (Psalm 45:16, I Pet. 2:9, Rev. 1:6, Rev. 5:10)

Verse 21
Thee, Jesus, King of kings, and Lord (I Tim. 6:15, Rev. 17:14, Rev. 19:16)
Of lords, I glory to proclaim, (Phil. 2:10-11)
From age to age thy praise record, (Psalm 45:17, Psalm 145:4, Psalm 145:21)
That all the world may learn thy name: (Psalm 45:17)
And all shall soon thy grace adore,
