The flesh against the spirit lusts

The flesh against the Spirit lusts,
But, while it strives to tyrannize,
My soul in love almighty trusts,
My faithful soul on Christ relies,
’Till this intestine war is o’er,
And sin destroy’d can tempt no more.

Hymnal/Album: Originally titled “Under the shadow of thy wings shall be my refuge, until this tyranny be overpast.”—[Psalm] lvii. 1. Introduced in Charles Wesley, Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. 1 (Bristol: Farley, 1762). Published in The Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley, Collected and Arranged by G. Osborn, Vol. 9 (London: Wesleyan-Methodist Conference Office, 1870), page 302.
