The number of the called is great

The number of the call’d is great,
But that of the elected small,
Invited to the gospel-treat
So few will hearken to the call;
So few the proffer’d blessing take,
And faithful to the end endure,
Giving all diligence to make
Conditional election sure.

Hymnal/Album: Originally titled: “‘So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many are called, but few chosen.’—Matt. 20, v. 16.” Wesley originally published this hymn in his 1762 hymnal "Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. 2" (Bristol: Farley, 1762). He later revised and expanded it in his unpublished 1766 manuscript “MS Matthew.” This manuscript is part of the collection of the Methodist Archive and Research Centre in The John Rylands Library, The University of Manchester (accession number MA 1977/577, Charles Wesley Notebooks Box 3). Osborn, Vol. 10 (London: Wesleyan-Methodist Conference Office, 1870), page 335. Expository Songs does not necessarily endorse all doctrinal assertions in this hymn and presents it for research purposes.
