What victims doth our God demand

What victims doth our God demand?
Not thoughtless beasts, or bodies slain:
Ourselves before thine altar stand,
The reasoning souls of living men;
Our bodies too, thro’ Christ thy Son,
An holy sacrifice we give,
And serve, and please our God alone,
And only for thy glory live.

Hymnal/Album: Originally titled “Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is, your reasonable service.”—[Rom.] xii. 1. Introduced in Charles Wesley, Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. 2 (Bristol: Farley, 1762). Published in The Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley, Collected and Arranged by G. Osborn, Vol. 13 (London: Wesleyan-Methodist Conference Office, 1872), page 16.
